Mantra

Chanting a mantra aloud creates a vibration through the body. The most basic musical instrument you can use is your voice. You can use your voice to relax, heal, or focus, by humming, chanting, singing, and even praying (or affirming) what you need. Although many fascinating instruments exist and have been designed to inspire healing in us, never forget that you, yourself, are an instrument and that you carry the power to heal with you everywhere that you go.

Using a mantra and silently repeating it in your mind is also very powerful and works in a different way from chanting aloud. Both are extremely beneficial and used for various and differing benefits. Both the use of silent and vocal mantra have a place in the meditator's tool box.

When I use a mantra, whether silently or aloud, I like to use a mala as another tool to keep me focused. A mala is a necklace style strand of beads, most commonly 108 in number, that are moved through the fingers each time the mantra is repeated. This helps to keep the mind focused on the mantra.
